AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what’s the difference, in plain English

Three acronyms, one goal. What each one means, how they fit together, and which one a UAE business should start with.

The short answer

SEO gets you ranked in Google’s list of links. AEO (answer engine optimisation) gets you used as the answer, in Google’s AI answers, featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO (generative engine optimisation) gets you named by ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity when they write a recommendation. They share one foundation: a website that loads fast and says plainly what you do.

In practice, most people use “AI visibility” to mean AEO and GEO together. That’s the term we use too.

SEO: be on the list

Search engine optimisation is the familiar one. You make your site fast and well built, write pages around what people search for, and earn links from other sites. Success is measured in rankings, clicks and visits.

It still matters a great deal. Google is still where most searches happen, and AI assistants often lean on pages that already rank well.

AEO: be the answer

More and more searches end without a click. Google shows an AI summary, a snippet or a map pack, and the person has what they need. Answer engine optimisation makes sure the answer comes from you: questions as headings, a direct answer in the first sentence or two, then the detail.

Success is measured in how often your words and your name appear in those answers, not just in clicks.

GEO: be the name AI recommends

When someone asks ChatGPT “which law firm in DIFC handles employment disputes?”, it searches, reads and writes a short answer with two or three names. Generative engine optimisation is the work of being one of those names: facts AI can repeat, consistent details across the web, genuine reviews and mentions on sites AI trusts.

ChatGPT sends most of this traffic today, around 87% of AI referrals in early 2026. AI referrals are still about 1% of all web traffic, but they convert well because the visitor arrives with a recommendation already in hand.

Where a UAE business should start

The UAE has the highest AI use in the world, around 70% of working-age people, so customers here are switching earlier than most. Start in this order:

  1. Check what ChatGPT and Google say about you today.
  2. Fix the website so every service, area and price is in plain, readable text.
  3. Make your Google Business Profile and directory details match your site exactly.
  4. Write honest answers to the ten questions customers ask most.
  5. Collect real reviews and earn a few real mentions, then measure every month.

Questions people ask

Is SEO dead now that people use ChatGPT?

No. AI assistants search the web to write their answers, and pages that rank well are easier for them to find. Good SEO is the base that AEO and GEO build on.

Do I need three different agencies?

No. The work overlaps heavily: a clear, fast website with honest answers and consistent details helps all three. One team should own it so the work doesn’t contradict itself.

Which should a small UAE business start with?

Fix the website and your Google Business Profile first. That is the foundation for Google, Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT at the same time.
